Figs are fruits that grow on the ficus tree a member of the mulberry family of moraceae. They belong to the genus ficus and their scientific name is ficus carica. Figs are known by various names in local languages. They are called âanjeerâ in hindi âathi palluâ in telugu âatti pazhamâ in tamil and malayalam âanjuraâ in kannada and âdumoorâ in bengali. A banyan also spelled "banian" is a fig that begins its life as an epiphyte i.e. a plant that grows on another plant when its seed germinates in a crack or crevice of a host tree or edifice. The banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is one of more than 750 species of fig trees each of which is pollinated only by its own species of tiny wasps that breed only inside the figs of their partner trees. Banyans are strangler figs It helps manage blood glucose levels by increasing insulin secretion due to its antioxidant properties. The antioxidants present in Banyan also helps to lower bad cholesterol levels. As per Ayurveda it is useful in diarrhea and female problems like leucorrhea due to its Kashaya (astringent) property.
